Open House Opportunities

Some Realtors don’t like doing open houses.  It takes up the middle of the day on Sunday.  It can seem like wasted time, if the goal is to sell the house.  Often, the people coming through are not really interested in purchasing a home, but are, rather, interested in seeing the decorating ideas of a neighbor.  I understand the reluctance of some.

But, I like hosting Open Houses.   I get to meet people.  It’s helpful to listen to what people are looking for in a home.  I get to answer questions about Real Estate and the current market.  I hear some really good ideas from Open House visitors, too. 

As a result of hosting Open Houses this year, I have made a few sales, made some new friends, reconnected with a few “old” friends, started volunteering at an adult literacy program, learned about a new decorating and staging business (renewyourroom.com), inspired a young single mom to dream of a very reachable goal of home ownership, and listened to more than one past home owner reminisce about the wonderful family memories.

Life is what you make it.  Open Houses are opportunities for potential buyers to see what is available and to begin to familiarize themselves with the local market.  For me, a licensed Real Estate Broker, it is an opportunity to connect with people in the community that I want to represent and serve well.

Freddie Mac began collecting data for 30-year loans in April 1971. A note in the Illinois REALTOR® Weekly Connection today quoted a Freddie Mac press release that said almost all mortgage indices are the lowest they have been in a year…great time to buy a house in Champaign Urbana!

McLean, VA – Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE) today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey® (PMMS®) in which the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 4.69 percent with an average 0.7 point for the week ending June 24, 2010, down from last week when it averaged 4.75 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 5.42 percent.

The 15-year FRM this week averaged 4.13 percent with an average 0.6 point, down from last week when it averaged 4.20 percent. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 4.87 percent.
